Yaw Asare
Damn! Its my birthday again. I do appreciate the well wishes but I want to point this out- I hate birthdays! No, not yours, just mine. Any time I say this, I get the strange looks. I'm infinitely thankful for the gift of life everyday but the yearly social construct makes me uncomfortable and I hope this post helps others understand why I feel this way.

1) The Attention: I'm not a fan of attention I don't deserve. You wake up and suddenly the spotlight is on you. “Happy Birthday!!!” Uhh, okay, thanks. I don't know exactly what it is about birthdays. I just don't like people making a big deal out of it. It's always nice to have few cronies genuinely wish me a happy birthday but when people who one way or the another find their way into my friends list on Facebook start posting on my wall phony "HBDs" (yup it’s never spelt in full) just so they can get me to write on their walls too when it’s their birthdays, It makes me sick. I see them as a reminder that I have not done anything good with my life, but I also feel very uncomfortable when other people congratulate me.

2) Mom Deserves the Credit: I didn't do a damn thing when I was born, Mom did all of the heavy pushing - Mothers should get the cake

3) The Phone Calls: Its 2am. You have slipped into REM sleep. Dreaming about a place you’d never be. Suddenly, your phone rings so loud you get scared. You try to see who’s calling at this ungodly hour but the screen is too bright. Since you awake you answer. A voice excitedly screams, “Happy Birthday!!!” Awkward silence. The voice comes back again, “Were you sleeping?” No, I was training to die. “Just wanted to be the first to wish you a Happy Birthday. Goodnight.” Well you did. And your prize is that i now loathe you! Now sing me back to sleep. If anyone wants to call me up today and tell me how glad they are that I'm alive, I fully support that. I would love to have that conversation with you. But if you call on my birthday I will probably ignore the call.

4) The Reminder That I'm Getting Old: On my birthdays, thanks to loads of birthday wishes I am constantly reminded of how old I'm getting. This gives me a flashback of my past life and I try to think of achievements which always end up in me being disappointed. I wish birthdays could be a day when a person wakes up like any normal day and goes through life without being told how old s/he is getting.

5) I Think Time Is Irrelevant In Our Lives: I have thought of time to somewhat be irrelevant to our lives. The fact that the earth has fully revolved around the sun since I was pushed into this world has nothing to do with my life at the present. I feel time is man-made and relative. We can be as old as we want to be whenever and as young as we want to be whenever. The earths revolving around the sun should not be a determinant of how we act and feel.

6) My Birthday Is In July: It’s a love/hate thing that my birthday is in the summer. Until 18, it meant me being on a holiday and being free to do what I want, wake up and not regret. Now, my mom is never around during the summer, my close friends either live far away from me or are on holidays elsewhere on different continents so I never get together to celebrate with them. I am always stuck with a bunch of strangers on my birthday (they actually turn out fun though) and I end up binge drinking. I have always wished for one of those birthdays where the few people I know and love will all be around so we can spend the day doing what we all love most.
On this day all I ask for is less love and a big fat joint. Is that too much to ask?

Miss Malaika 2013: Who Wears The Crown?

I teamed up with a Kingston University media and journalist student Sherry, based in London to come with opinions. An expert photographer, Gyamfi, in Ghana was also consulted for advice.

You can click on their names to vote for them on the Miss Malaika Ghana page on Facebook and also follow the whole event via the hash tag #Malaika2013 on twitter. All comments and opinions are welcome.

=did not like her; =She is ok; =Liked her;
=Really liked her; = She is Amazing!

Lady Eugenia

Her hair is absolutely gorgeous which puts her on top of my list but her outfits looked a bit unkempt and pose. She looks ‘simply nice’. The photo with her in Chinese outfit is stunning. She’s a beauty though and at least deserves to be a runner up.

Lady Esther

I think she has a great height for a beauty show and she is good looking. However her make up in this particular picture did not suite her overall look and is the first thing that hits. This is a pageant to highlight beauty not how good or bad your make-up artist is.

Lady Lordina

A close up of her face shows us how ravishing her beauty is. She did well to communicate her beauty by wearing outfits that are not too “loud”, yet spicing up her look by showing a bit of cleavage to keep male fans happy. I think she has a good chance of winning or being a runner-up.

Lady Donna

Just plain wrong!! I mean who wears leggings for a portfolio shoot? Unless it’s a ballet competition. Awkward pose. She looks like she's been forced. but here is a Facebook comment to cheer you up by Kissi:

“It not all about sporting a million dollar smile or wearing the most fancy face.. It got to do with beauty with brains and that's who u are dear.. U are beautiful inside out... intelligent and amazing.. u deserve to be here..”

Yup, this lady is going to need all of her brains to win this pageant. Unfortunately brains are not depicted in photos.

Lady Priscilla

I think the first thing that strikes me about this goddess is her smile. She manages to keep a smile in all three poses. Her make-up is almost natural thus her real beauty is not distorted. She also lets us know that she has a fashion taste as told by her shorts, the polka dot and sexy pink lace outfit. Simple but nice. She is a gorgy and I tip her to be the queen or a runner-up.

Lady Bridget

To start off, this ladies height could have her win the show! However, I am slightly disappointed because we only get to see her face from sideways. Her outfit is very nice but maybe if she wore a weave instead of braids, she would be more eloquent. In addition, I wish she had worn less jewellery. By being bold and confident she would stand out more, so no more shy poses miss!

Lady Abigail

This lady right here is a pure beauty. The way she wears her dress tells us that she has a great sense of style but instead of the A line dress a nice figure hugging dress would have been good. It seems like she has gorges curves but the dress does not flaunt it. A close up of her face shows a brightening smile coupled with a good set of teeth which is good in order to win any beauty pageant or at least be a runner-up.

Lady Candy

I think she is naturally beautiful but her make-up is a let-down in this particular picture. If only she had toned it down a bit, we would not have noticed her reddened eyes. What's more, a confident pose would have helped her. Her choice of clothes did not help either as in the case of the green bottoms and black blouse she reveals a tummy that is not so flat which is a minus in beauty pageants. If she gets the right attire, make up and poses, she could go far in this pageant.

Lady Alexandra

Walking down the streets on a normal day, she would be an attractive girl but she failed to show us that attractiveness with her poses. In the bright orange and black dress we get a sneak peek of her beauty but she tried too hard in the other poses which then steal her beauty away from our eyes. The pose in the check dress is fair enough and with all things being equal, she is going to be a real competition in the pageant.

Lady Selma

They say a picture is worth a thousand words but in these pictures, Lady Selma only tells us one thing; “I’m shy”. CONFIDENCE [not Haugen] is needed here. Her dress in the full portrait does not reveal her true form so we are left wondering what form she really has. Furthermore, her dress in the other portraits grabs all the attention when she deserves as much attention too. Some jewellery and longer hair would have completed the look. Overall, I think some other clothes will do here.

Lady Twumwaa

Her make-up is fantastic! She is a real beauty and does not lose her beauty in any of the poses by maintaining her smile. I love how she rocks her make-up and it does not clash with her orange dress, it is so well done and she pulled it off so well. I think I am in love with her already and if she keeps this up, she could wear the crown or be a runner-up.

Lady Rashida

I don’t like her. I don’t hate her. We did not get a full portrait so there is not much to comment about. Her beauty is not that striking though. But from her pictures, I can tell one thing. her favourite colour is black.

Lady Lois

First of all, I am not appalled by the shady designs. They are cheesy. From the coloured portraits she seems to have a beautiful face that could make the competition really tight. Her smile is warming.

Lady Betty

She made a mistake by wearing the leggings for this portrait. Her outfits are not flattering for her. Honestly, I don’t see anything exciting about her. Not much enthusiasm going on. We need more enthusiasm!

Lady Ohemaa

A cute face treated with pretty eyes. However, her outfit in the full portrait does not compliment her true beauty. It gives her a bit of a puffed tummy which takes away some of her points. She also needs to show us that she means business with much more thrilling poses.

Lady Nhyira

I like her pose in the bottom left corner. I think it is the one pose that makes us realise she indeed deserves to be in the pageant. Her dress is beautiful but the jewellery steals the show.

Lady Naa Oye

Her chocolate complexion, gracious height, smile and fashion taste makes her a rare beauty. She presents herself as she is and that makes her unique. Not only is she about the crown but she is in to have some fun too. I think she deserves to wear the crown or even be a runner-up.

Lady Vincentia

If I like anything, it is her pose in the upper-right corner and her smile. I would have loved her better if she had worn her real nails. I think it is not right to substitute natural beauty for artificial beauty.

Lady Yoda

She has a very attractive body and I love how she reveals her natural beauty to us. I love her this way. Anything artificially added would have been a blemish to her appeal. She deserves to wear the crown.

Lady Aisha

She has this innocent childish look that makes me question her age. Slender long legs and a model like body. I don’t really know if it is that of a beauty pageant though. Her make-up and attire in the full portrait makes her look stunning.
